Headphones have gained popularity from the time it was released in the market. As time goes on, model designs inevitably change for more convenience and better function. Earbud headphones had been a very popular design of headphones. It's shape is made to fit snugly in your eardrums. Hence, earwax accumulation cannot be helped.

The ear naturally produces a waxy substance called the cerumen. This substance, more commonly known as earwax aids in the lubrication and protection of the ear against water and other foreign objects. Unfortunately, the wax may find its way into tiny cracks and crevices on your earbud headphones. When this wax gets exposed to air and dries up, it hardens, making it hard to clean. It sometimes affects the quality of sound leading to permanent impairment.

It has been studied that earbud headsets are amongst those models who easily get broken and damaged. Cleaning your earbud headphones every so often will ensure the prevention of the wax entering your headphones causing damage to the system. Hence, it helps in maintaining the longevity of its optimum function. Here are some simple steps:

Disconnect your earphones from your mp3 player such as an iPod. You will probably want to focus more on your earphones. Hence, disconnecting it from your mp3 player allows you to clean your earphones thoroughly.

Moisten the tip of a cotton swab with water. Make sure that it is not dripping wet - just damp enough to clean the earpiece. Over-moistening it may increase the risk of water entering into your headphones. Water generally damages circuitry over time and it is not advisable to expose the insides of your headphones to moisture.

After dampening the tip of your cotton swab, rub it along the surface of your earbuds. Try to put on gentle pressure to areas that are particularly dirty. For dried wax that are difficult to remove by water and swab, putting a dab of olive oil onto a cotton tip and rubbing it against the soiled area may help. After rubbing the surface of the earbud with water, oil and cotton swabs, you must dry the area by wiping the area with another dry cotton tip. This ensures that no moisture will find its way through your earbud headphones.
